Diphtheria is an illness that can cause breathing difficulties, heart problems, nerve damage, pneumonia and even death.  The risk of more serious effects and death is greater in very young children than it is with the elderly.
Tetanus, or “lockjaw” can cause seizures and severe muscle spasms.  These seizures can be strong enough to cause bone fractures of the spine.  The death rate of those with tetanus is 30 to 40 percent.
Pertussis, or “whooping cough” is a serious illness that can bring about severe spells of coughing that can interfere with regular breathing.  Pertussis can also cause pneumonia, long-lasting bronchitis, seizures and even death.
